Bovine TB outbreak in Dumfries and Galloway

07/04/2005

Bovine TB has been confirmed in a herd of cattle in Dumfries and Galloway.

All animals in the herd will be compulsorily slaughtered with compensation paid.

The origin of the outbreak in a beef herd at Southwoodhead Farm, Canonbie, has not been established.

Tracings on and off the farm are being investigated. Movement restrictions have been placed on the affected farm and adjacent premises will be tested if required.

Following detection of lesions in a slaughterhouse case, tests on the herd of 95 cattle showed 43 reactors. Disease has now been confirmed by post mortem examination.

There are no risks to health for the general population. Any farm workers who have been in direct contact with infected animals will be assessed for risk of exposure and will be offered screening for TB by medical staff according to standard national protocols.
