£20 million for contaminated land clean up

04/04/2005

Scotland's councils will receive a share of £15 million to clean up polluted land at former industrial sites over the next two years.

A further £5 million will be held in reserve to be allocated in 2007-2008.

For the first time, councils will also have to detail overall progress in the task of identifying and remediating contaminated land.

Announcing the funding Deputy Environment Minister Lewis Macdonald said:

"The Scottish Executive is determined to provide a cleaner and healthier environment for all.

"In the last three years alone we have provided £14.5 million in mainstream funding for the clean up of contaminated land.

"The £15 million I am announcing today, along with a further £5 million which will be made available to local authorities in 2007-2008, is a clear indication of the Executive's commitment to removing health risks, addressing dereliction and removing barriers to regeneration.

"The new monitoring procedures for local authorities will also ensure the most effective processes for bringing back into productive use historically contaminated land to the benefit of both the environment and communities."
