Euro cash for Eden Court

31/01/2005

A £2.675 million European grant for the project to redevelop the Eden Court Theatre in Inverness was announced today.

First Minister Jack McConnell was visiting the theatre, which will be one of the top venues for the Highland Year of Culture 2007, during a visit to the city.

He said:

"The Eden Court Theatre has been the premier cultural venue in the Highlands for 30 years. But now it is time to update, expand and modernise it - to match the cultural ambitions of the Highlands in the 21st century.

"The Highlands are enjoying a cultural renaissance that is leading the way in Scotland. It's time to celebrate all aspects of that culture, reflecting the traditional past, contemporary strengths and future aspirations of the region.

"That is why I am delighted to be involved in the Year of Highland Culture, and this investment in Eden Court will be a huge boost to the plans for 2007."

The Eden Court Theatre was opened in 1976, and the £17.4 million redevelopment project will increase the capacity of the main auditorium, establish a second, smaller theatre and provide cinema facilities.

Culture Minister Patricia Ferguson announced an Executive capital grant of £5 million for the project earlier this month.

The £2.675 million announced today is a European Regional Development Fund grant.
