Meeting with Norwegian Fisheries Minister

18/01/2005

Fisheries Minister Ross Finnie and his deputy Lewis Macdonald today met with Svein Ludwigsen, the Norwegian Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, to discuss a range of aquaculture and sea fisheries issues, including trade on farmed salmon and the opportunities for collaboration in areas of common interest.

Mr Finnie said:

" We are determined to work with the Norwegians to secure a sustainable future for our Scottish aquaculture and sea fishing industries, and for the communities they support.

"Although we often find ourselves in competition with Norway, there are many areas where our two governments have shared interests on which we can co-operate. We continue to press the case for protection of our salmon farming industry but we have held constructive talks with Norway to develop long term solutions, and we will develop a regular dialogue to improve sea fisheries enforcement, management and scientific co-operation"
