'Wrap up warm' advice
21/12/2004
Chief Medical Officer Dr Mac Armstrong today reminded older people of the dangers of winter as the cold weather begins to bite.
Dr Armstrong said:
"This is a particularly unusual festive season for us. As Christmas Day and New Years Day fall on Saturdays, we can all look forward to two four day holiday periods in quick succession.
"I'm sure we all have plans on how we're going to spend these days, but let's not forget that this means doctors and chemists will be closed for longer this year.
"This means that all of us, older people in particular, must ensure that we stock up with all the medicines we need to get through this period.
"Winter can be an especially difficult time of year for older people and it is important that we do all we can to help them keep safe over the next few months.
"Even the simple things, like wearing plenty of warm clothes when you venture outside, wearing sturdy shoes and being careful when walking on icy payments can help them keep them.
"If you are an older person, use your winter fuel payment to ensure your home is well heated. Stock up with enough hot drinks and food to see you over the holiday period and make sure you have enough of any prescription medications from your doctor.
"I would urge anyone who has an elderly relative or neighbour to check up on them regularly and see that they're aware of this advice as they are particularly vulnerable at this time of year, both physically and mentally.
"Finally, I would urge anyone who hasn't yet received their flu jab to get it as soon as possible. It's still not too late, and although there was a slight issue with vaccine supply this year, GPs now have enough to inoculate all those who need it."
This year's annual flu and pneumococcal programme was launched on October 4. Everyone aged 65 and over, and those under 65 with long term medical complaints are entitled to the vaccination.
