Scots swimmers make a splash down under

03/12/2004

Young Scottish swimmers have won a total of 30 medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Bendigo, Australia.

Each member of the 14-strong team won at least one medal: seven gold, 10 silver and 13 bronze.

Speaking from Bendigo, the Sports Minister Patricia Ferguson congratulated the swimmers for their outstanding effort and dedication.

The Minister said:

"This is a wonderful achievement for our young swimmers. They have finished second to Australia in the swimming medals table. That in itself is exceptional.

"They have been magnificent ambassadors for Scotland, and great credit to themselves and their families, many of whom have travelled to Australia to cheer on their sons and daughters.

"I am very proud of all our young athletes competing here. It looks as if Scotland's total medals haul will exceed what was achieved in Edinburgh four years ago."

Bendigo is host to the second Commonwealth Youth Games. The inaugural games were held in Edinburgh in 2000 as part of the Millennium celebrations.

Bendigo is one of Victoria's major regional centres, located 150km north-west of Melbourne.
