Minister supports young Scots
29/11/2004
Sports Minister Patricia Ferguson will cheer on Scotland's top young athletes and meet the people behind taking the Commonwealth Games to Victoria when she travels to Australia today.
Ms Ferguson said:
"Scotland is one of the best prepared teams to meet the challenge of representing their country and performing to their best at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Bendigo this week.
"We are proud to support Scotland's athletes and sports governing bodies through sportscotland, providing financial and technical assistance to help the athletes and coaches to perform at the highest level. I would like to extend my congratulations to the athletes who have demonstrated outstanding effort and dedication in pursuit of personal excellence.
"The Commonwealth Youth Games is an exciting concept which gives our emerging young talent valuable experience of international competition. I hope our young athletes enjoy the spirit of the Commonwealth Youth Games and come away from Bendigo with good performances, lasting memories and friendships that will last for a lifetime."
The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport will be in Australia for five days, and will meet her counterpart from the Victoria state government who is responsible for the organisation of the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
A working group is currently considering the opportunities for a Glasgow bid for the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
