Unique skatepark for Ayrshire

22/11/2004

Sports Minister Patricia Ferguson cut the turf on the site of UK's first supervised skate park today.

Building will commence on 'Revolutions' in Spring next year on the North Ayrshire Skate Park, a £450,000 facility situated opposite the Auchenharvie Leisure Centre near Saltcoats and Stevenston.

The Minister will be joined in the sod-cutting by local MSP Cathy Jamieson, and Ian Taylor, Chief Executive of sportscotland.

Ms Ferguson said:

"This new initiative which will provide a unique community facility for young people in the area, has demonstrated partnership working at its best.

"The North Ayrshire Skate Group, which worked voluntarily with public and private partners, had the vision three years ago for a top-class facility for young people who have a passion for skateboarding and roller-blading.

"'Revolutions' will give users increased opportunities to participate in sporting activity and provide long-term health benefits.

"Congratulations to everyone who has dedicated their own time towards this project. I look forward to seeing the building complete in the near future and being made available to the area's young people."
