Rekindling links with Dutch legal system

07/10/2004

The Lord Advocate is in the Netherlands to raise awareness of the Scottish legal system at an international civil law conference.

Colin Boyd QC is speaking at the Access to Justice conference being held at Leiden University as part of a series of 'Scotland in the Netherlands' events.

The Lord Advocate aims to consolidate links with Dutch law specialists and use the conference as a forum for sharing new ideas and working methods in the area of civil law.

Colin Boyd QC said:

"This event is an excellent opportunity to rekindle an historical relationship with the Netherlands. Many people may not know of the connection between the Scottish and Dutch legal systems.

"In recent history there has been a very significant example of this link and the co-operation between the 2 countries - the Lockerbie trial.

"I hope we can build on these links and continue to share knowledge and information that will benefit both our legal systems."

The Scotland in the Netherlands programme of events was designed by the Scottish Executive to showcase Scottish culture, tourism and science.

A series of events have been taking place over the past few months, including:

  • Youth Theatre project - a collaboration between East Glasgow Youth Theatre and the ISH Project
  • CJP & Young Scot seminar
  • Brain sciences lecture and seminar
  • Cancer seminar
  • Wee Stories Theatre tour of Tam O'Shanter
  • Drugs, Substance Abuse and prostitution policy study visits
