Moves to strengthen enterprise in education
01/10/2004
New guidelines to help schools ensure that young people receive the best possible experience of enterprise in education were announced today.
The How Good is Our School at Enterprise in Education? resource has been produced by HM Inspectorate of Education in partnership with schools, education authorities and the business community. Quality Indicators will support headteachers and teachers in embedding the Executive's Determined to Succeed strategy for Enterprise in Education within and across the curriculum.
Deputy Enterprise and Lifelong Learning Minister Lewis Macdonald said:
"Encouraging enterprising attitudes in our pupils is the route to a more enterprising Scotland. Enterprise in Education is focused on increasing pupils' understanding of, and interest in, work and enterprise. We want young people to enter the workplace with the right mix of skills - together with the self-confidence and drive to make the most of them.
"The important guidelines being published today will help schools deliver enterprise in education of the highest quality, ensuring it is embedded across and within the curriculum - not just bolted on as an optional extra. They will also be used by as a benchmark for school inspectors.
"The Quality Indicators are one of a range of tools for teaching staff that will help them build on the excellent work already being carried out in schools across Scotland.
"I would encourage head teachers, supported by local authorities and other partners, to work with their teachers to make the most of this important new resource."
The Executive, as part of its March 2003 response to Determined to Succeed; a review of enterprise in education, asked HMIE to develop resources to support schools in evaluating the quality of pupils' experiences in enterprise in education.
The Executive published its Determined to Succeed strategy in March 2003.
The Scottish Budget 2003-2006 has allocated £40 million to support the strategy. A Partnership for a Better Scotland states "We will make sure that every pupil has the opportunity to learn entrepreneurial skills at school. We will expand the number of Scottish schools involved in Enterprise in Education from 10 per cent to 100 per cent."
