Scots fashion students wow Paris
17/06/2004
Scottish fashion students are showing off their designs in Paris today as part of the GREAT! Britain trade fair being held within the British Embassy gardens.
The event brings together a number of UK companies which demonstrate excellence in the fields of aeronautics, packaging, building and public works, multimedia and financial services.
The Scottish Executive is hosting a Scottish fashion show as part of the trade fair, and has worked in partnership with students from Glasgow School of Art, Heriot Watt University Scottish Borders Campus and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee to put together a unique celebration of contemporary Scottish fashion and design.
Minister for Finance and Public Services Andy Kerr said:
"Scotland is proud of the warm and long standing relationship that exists between the Scots and the French, and the Scottish Executive is delighted to be supporting today's GREAT! Britain celebration which is providing an opportunity to showcase the best that Scotland can offer.
"Scotland's textile and design industry is at the cutting edge of modern design and we are delighted that three leading educational institutions have joined the Executive to create today's fashion show. The exciting designs on show are a taste of contemporary Scottish fashion and design and demonstrate the skills and innovation of our talented fashion students."
Further opportunities to promote Scotland throughout the day will be on offer as the Scottish Culinary Team will present a food showcase and guests throughout the day will be able to enjoy the best of Scottish food and drink. Some of Scotland's most prestigious companies, renowned for their high quality produce, are offering delights, including lamb, highland venison and fresh seafood.
The GREAT! Britain trade fair is part of this year's entente cordiale celebrations which is celebrating the centenary of the Treaty which marked the end of the colonial disputes between France and Great Britain. It now symbolises the friendship and co-operation that exists between the two countries.
A Scottish programme of entente cordiale events is underway and highlights the strong bond of friendship between France and Scotland. It includes a wide range of trade and investment, science and culture, education and sporting and cultural events and activities, and is the biggest programme of overseas promotion since devolution.
The trade fair is open all day to invited British and French guests and is followed by a reception to mark HM The Queen's birthday.
