Scotland to host 2007 Sudirman Cup

Scotland is to host badminton's prestigious world team championships, the Sudirman Cup, in 2007.

Sports Minister Frank McAveety congratulated the bidding team and welcomed the event as another step in making Scotland a major events destination.

Mr McAveety said:

"This is fantastic news that Scotland will host another major international event. The tournament which will be hosted in Glasgow will be beamed across the globe and will showcase Scotland to a worldwide audience.

"The bidding team must be congratulated for their hard work in putting the bid together. I am confident that when the tournament arrives we will showcase Scotland to players, spectators and television viewers from all over the world, and demonstrate that Scotland offers a fantastic platform for hosting major international events."

David Williams, chief executive of EventScotland, added:

"EventScotland welcomes the International Badminton Federation's decision. We are pleased to have brought the key public partners together and have been successful in securing the bid to host the tenth Sudirman Cup in Glasgow in 2007. Today's decision, provides the country with yet another opportunity to demonstrate Scotland's ability to host major international events and position Scotland as a premier events destination on the world stage.

"EventScotland will continue to work in partnership with BadmintonScotland, Glasgow City Council and UK Sport to ensure that the Sudirman Cup 2007, in Glasgow, is the best ever held."

The Sudirman Cup 2007 will be held at the National Badminton Academy in Scotstoun, Glasgow.

It is badminton's World Mixed Team Championship and was added to the world calendar in 1989. Held every two years, it combines the full five disciplines in competition.

The Sudirman Cup was hosted in Glasgow in 1997. It is estimated then to have reached an audience of 1.238 billion viewers worldwide. 603 competitors from 63 nations competed over 2 weeks with 31,000 people attending the tournament. It is estimated that the tournament generated £1.9 million sterling in visitor spend in Glasgow alone.

The bidding team, included representatives from Scotland's new events body EventScotland, BadmintonScotland, UK Sport and Glasgow City Council. The final decision was made by the International Badminton Federation in Jakarta on Sunday, May 9.
