Healthy future for environment

A consultation is seeking views on how to tackle poverty and environmental degradation.
It will also examine ways of dealing with climate change and energy, sustainable consumption, the use of natural resources, community development and behavioural change.
The findings will help form the UK Sustainable Development Strategy - a strategic framework to provide a consistent approach for the UK Government, Scottish Executive, Welsh Assembly and Northern Ireland Administration.
Each administration will create separate strategies based on their various priorities and responsibilities.
Environment Minister Ross Finnie said:
"We are working together with the Welsh Assembly, the Northern Ireland Administration and the UK Government to create a framework for sustainable development to tackle poverty and environmental degradation inScotland, theUKand the world.
"We all have a part to play in ensuring that our actions do not hamper the opportunities of future generations from enjoying the benefits of living in a clean and healthy environment.
"Only by working together can we address inequalities in health and prosperity, tackle climate change and conserve our rich and valuable biodiversity.
"I invite the people of Scotland to make sure their voices are heard in defining our shared priorities, the principles for delivering these and identifying actions to tackle the most pressing demands."
The consultation 'Taking it On: DevelopingUKsustainable development strategy together' runs untilJuly 31, 2004and seeks views on:
- explaining what sustainable development is
- vision and guiding principles
- what priorities should be
- how to take forward action on a variety of issues including climate change and energy, sustainable consumption, the use of natural resources, community development and encouraging behavioural change.

The Scottish Sustainable Development Forum will have a leading role in the consultation inScotland. A series of online discussion forums will examine various aspects of sustainable development. Further information is available at www.ssdforum.org.uk.
