Social care training
13/04/2004
More than 60 voluntary groups will use their share of more than £1 million to enable residential and daycare staff to meet tough new standards set by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC).
Voluntary care workers across Scotland will be trained to even higher standards to ensure vulnerable people receive the best possible support, according to Deputy Education Minister Euan Robson.
Mr Robson, who has ministerial responsibility for social work, said:
"Social care is highly skilled work and voluntary care groups have a key role to play in complementing the support that local authority staff provide. To strengthen this valuable relationship we are making more than £1 million available to Scottish voluntary organisations this year.
"Support will be targeted at residential care workers - who often find themselves at the sharp end of practice looking after people and children around the clock - and adult day care centre managers.
"All carers must be equipped to meet the needs of our most vulnerable people as well as understanding how changes in the profession and improvements in technology can benefit them. The SSSC's standards for social care staff will help achieve this and we want all social carers to meet the standard over the next three years.
"We are determined to deliver a social care profession which is fit for a modern Scotland."
Alzheimer Scotland training officer Jenny Marlborough said:
"The funding will ensure that managerial and care practice skills across the organisation will be enhanced, contributing to our overall quality of service. We also see it as a way forward for staff recruitment and retention positively influenced by an effectively resourced staff development strategy."
£1,069,282 is available in this financial year from the new £3 million Voluntary Sector Development Fund. This fund will make a further £2 million available over next two financial years. The fund is a National Workforce Group (NWG) initiative announced by Euan Robson on February 12, 2004.
Voluntary care workers are expected to meet the standards for SSSC registration over the next three years. Further details of the registration criteria are available on the SSSC website.
