Latest housing trends

Information on housing is published today in the statistical bulletin Housing Trends in Scotland: Quarter Ending 30 September 2003. The bulletin includes quarterly information on public sector house sales, new house building and local authority lettings and evictions.
Sales of public authority dwellings
• 5,663 applications were made by sitting tenants to buy public authority dwellings during the quarter July to September 2003. This represents a decrease of 4,285 (43 per cent) on the number of applications during the same period in 2002.
• 4,204 public authority dwellings were sold to sitting tenants during the quarter July to September 2003, an increase of 69 (two per cent) on the same period in 2002.
New house building
• 5,777 new dwellings were started during July to September 2003, 351 (six per cent) more than during the same period in 2002.
• 6,019 new dwellings were completed during the quarter July to September 2003, 485 (eight per cent) less than during the same period in 2002.
Local authority lettings and evictions
• 9,971 permanent lettings were made of local authority dwellings during the quarter July to September 2003, just over 895 (eight per cent) fewer than were made during July to September 2002.
• There were 215 evictions of local authority tenants during the quarter July to September 2003, 20 (eight per cent) less than the corresponding quarter of 2002. Seven cases were as a result of anti-social behaviour.
Figures for lettings and evictions do not include authorities which transferred their total housing stock in 2003 (Glasgow, Dumfries and Galloway and Scottish Borders).
