Chief exec appointed for ITI for Energy

Mr Tony Amor is to be appointed as Chief Executive of the new Intermediary Technology Institute (ITI) for Energy, it was announced today.

Mr Amor's appointment completes the four-strong team who will be responsible for setting up and driving forward the group holding company and ITIs specialising in the key sectors of Energy, Life Sciences and Techmedia.

Based in Aberdeen, Dundee and Glasgow respectively, the three flagship Institutes aim to:

• Increase and sustain the birth rate of high-value technology-based companies

• Substantially increase the level of exchange between academia and businesses in Scotland and;

• Help realise the commercial potential of the Scottish science base.

Deputy Enterprise Minister Lewis Macdonald said:

"I am delighted to announce this important new appointment. Mr Amor will bring a diverse range of skills and experience which will be of great benefit in driving forward our plans for ITI Scotland.

"The ITIs represent a significant, long-term investment in Scotland's economic future. We have committed £450 million over ten years to develop market driven technologies that can be used by companies to develop leading edge products and processes.


"The ITI for Energy offers Scotland and the North East a massive opportunity to expand its involvement in the broader energy marketplace. It will also help the vital energy industry to continue to grow and develop, and assist it in becoming a world leader in the development of renewable and other technologies.

"We now have in place an impressive management team who will be responsible for forging ahead with this landmark initiative. The ITIs are a crucial component of our vision for a Smart, Successful Scotland and to the long term success of the Scottish economy. I wish the team every success."

Scottish Enterprise Chief Executive Robert Crawford also backed the new appointment.

He said:

"Gordon Campbell, Chairman of ITI Scotland, has been leading on the ITI Energy since the establishment of ITI Scotland in September this year. Things have been progressing extremely well.

"With the wealth of market experience Tony brings to the table, ITI Energy will continue to go from strength to strength."

Welcoming Tony to ITI Scotland, Chairman Gordon Campbell said:

"Tony will bring valuable experience to ITI Energy, that will help us forge sound collaborations in technology development with a commercial end in sight."

The ITIs will commission work from leading researchers, locally and world-wide, with the primary objective of supporting existing and new, high-growth, sustainable companies with a global reach.

ITI Scotland is a joint activity of Scottish Enterprise and Highlands & Islands Enterprise. It will operate as a subsidiary of Scottish Enterprise with funding coming from within the agency's existing budget.

Tony Amor, the new Chief Executive of the Energy ITI, has an extensive career within the sector. As well as working for Shell International, he has been President of California-based energy company, Natomas. He has also previously founded his own company, based in San Francisco, specialising in the energy, power and infrastructure industries.

ITI Techmedia, based in Glasgow, is headed up by former vice president of Sony Europe, David Creed. The CEO of ITI Operations which provides the shared activities for the ITI is Roger Dickinson who has broad legal and corporate management experience. ITI Life Sciences, based in Dundee, is led by entrepreneur John Chiplin. ITI Scotland Chairman Gordon Campbell is chairman and former Chief Executive of Babcock International plc.
