Farmed fish production survey for 2002

Details of the production of farmed salmon, trout and other fish species in Scotland last year are provided today in the Scottish Fish Farms Annual Production Survey 2002, published by Fisheries Research Services, an agency of the Scottish Executive.
Key Statistics include:
- Production of salmon in 2002 was up five point one per cent from 138,519 tonnes to 145,609 tonnes, the tenth consecutive annual increase
- Employment of staff involved in salmon production rose to 1,306 an increase of 49
- Production of rainbow trout also increased from 5,466 tonnes to 6,659 tonnes
- The overall employment figures remained virtually unchanged with an increase by one to 160
- Production of new farmed species remained low although there were increases overall - 175.7 tonnes of brown trout/sea trout, 187.2 tonnes of halibut, 7.2 tonnes of arctic charr. There was no reported production of cod during 2002
- The forecasts for production continues to reflect the growth of the sector - 400 tonnes of brown trout/sea trout, 144 tonnes of cod, 292 tonnes of halibut and 17 tonnes of arctic charr
- Employment figures rose overall by two to 99
