20/11/2003
Funding of £1.149 million has been awarded to fund improvements to public transport in Angus, Dundee and Perth & Kinross.
The funding will be allocated as follows:
• Angus Council £320,873
• Dundee Council £427, 851
• Perth & Kinross £401,084.
Transport Minister Nicol Stephen said:
"We must focus on improving public transport throughout Scotland and I am delighted to announce funding of £1.149 million for improvements to public transport in Angus, Dundee and Perth & Kinross.
"This funding will allow each local authority to invest in improvements to public transport in their area such as bus stop infrastructure, bus priority measures, park & ride, and cycling and walking initiatives.
"One of the biggest challenges we face is the need to make public transport more attractive, safer and more sustainable in order to promote economic growth and to connect our communities.
"We can help build strong communities and tackle poverty by connecting people to each other through better transport links. The key to this is joint working between local authorities and transport providers.
"At present we are consulting on how to make transport better in every part of Scotland. Our proposals include plans for a national transport agency and enhanced regional transport partnerships, which will allow local authorities to work together, sharing expertise to deliver better services in their area.
"We are determined to deliver greater investment in public transport. Over the next three years the total share of spending on public transport will increase to 70% of the transport budget. Over the next ten years we will spend over £3 billion on the biggest integrated package of transport infrastructure investment Scotland has ever seen."
