Modern Apprenticeship Awards

Apprentices have been rewarded for their success at an awards ceremony.

The winners of this year's Scottish Modern Apprenticeship Awards were announced at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Edinburgh last night.

The awards ceremony celebrated the high standards now being reached by the many employers, training providers, colleges and candidates involved in Modern Apprenticeships.

Modern Apprenticeships combine paid employment with the opportunity to train for jobs at craft, technician and management level. They are managed by Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

Deputy Enterprise and Lifelong Learning Minister, Lewis Macdonald announced the awards which showcase apprentices, employers and organisations that have shown outstanding contributions in a range of categories.

The winners are:

  • Apprentice Achievement (Continuing personal development)Archie Henderson, Glasgow
  • Apprentice Achievement (Outstanding contribution to the workplace)Elaine Tomal, Aberdeenshire
  • Apprentice Achievement (Overcoming difficulties)Barry Valance, Glasgow
  • Employer (Small)Easterton Stables, East Dunbartonshire
  • Employer (Medium)Alstom Transport Renovations, Glasgow
  • Employer (Large)Tayside University Hospitals
  • Training ProviderTrain Shetland, Shetland Islands
  • Partnership Reid Kerr College, Paisley and BAA Glasgow Airport
  • The Ron Taylor Award for Quality in Training Delivery BAE Systems, Glasgow

Archie Henderson, a Modern Apprentice at Glasgow's world-renowned Hunterian Museum, received a further accolade as he went on to receive an Outstanding Achievement Award.

Lewis Macdonald, Deputy Enterprise and Lifelong Learning Minister, said:

"The finalists are of an extremely high quality, and I am delighted to hear the success stories around tonight's winners. Each and every one of them is leading the way in helping us build Scotland's skilled workforce - a key aim of our enterprise strategy and fundamental to our success as a nation.

"I also congratulate the many thousands of young people across Scotland who have successfully completed their Modern Apprenticeships and who are now playing their part in building a prosperous Scotland. "

Sue Baldwin, director of skills development, Scottish Enterprise, said:

"There are more than 27,000 people in Scotland currently training as Modern Apprentices across all industry sectors. Our winners tonight represent some of the highest achievers in a wide range of categories.

"Developed by industry, Modern Apprenticeships are fundamental to our task of creating a high calibre workforce in an economy centred on the skills and knowledge of its people."
