Scotland's heroes on parade
06/10/2003
Heroes from across the country were honoured at Edinburgh Castle today for acts of bravery ranging from stopping burglaries to saving lives.
First Minister Jack McConnell said:
"Individual acts of bravery and courage can make a big difference to people's lives and help to strengthen Scotland's communities.
"These heroes come from across Scotland and a range of backgrounds. Young and old are being honoured, from schoolchildren to workers in our public services. They each have their own heroic story to tell. The awards are one of the ways that Scotland says thank you.
"There are a record number of police officers in Scotland and we are stepping up our efforts to tackle the crime and anti-social behaviour that cause misery in our communities.
"But there are times when it is only through the selfless actions and quick-thinking of the public that the police can achieve successful results. On their behalf and on behalf of the people of Scotland, I would like to commend these heroes for their inspirational example."
Among those receiving an award today were six year old Greig Ian George Masson, who guided Grampian Police to his family's remote and isolated farmhouse near Stonehaven when his mother became trapped in February last winter. He also comforted his mother, who was heavily pregnant, and his three year old brother.
Also being honoured was Fiona Milligan of Rosyth, a nurse at Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline. In February this year, she successfully assisted police officers in apprehending a man who had entered a ward armed with a handgun.
The Scottish Executive invited nominations from all police forces across Scotland and a total of 79 citizens were nominated. Details of winner can be had from individual forces.
