Local authority staff figures
01/08/2003
Figures published today show a year on year increase of 4,614 full-time equivalent staff working in Scottish local authorities, a 1.9 per cent increase between June 2001 and June 2002.
The June 2002 Joint Staffing Watch, released jointly by the Executive and COSLA, shows a total of 242,192 full-time equivalent staff, compared with the June 2001 figure of 237,579. This change includes an increase of 1,992 in the category of non-teaching education staff, which includes school, pre-school and early school classroom assistants. The survey also recorded an increase of 1,309 FTE staff in the service group Social Work.
The other major changes in reported numbers by service group in the year to June 2002 (e.g. the decrease of 724 full-time equivalent staff working in Arts, Sport and Leisure) are mainly a consequence of councils reclassifying staff between service groups.
The new Joint Staffing Watch survey began in 1996, and results can be viewed at www.scotland.gov.uk/jointstaffingwatch.
All figures above are shown to the nearest full-time equivalent. Therefore, figures may not sum to totals due to rounding.
Changes in staff numbers may arise as a result of a local authority service being provided by staff who are no longer on the payroll of the authority.
The report gives a detailed description of the results of the June 2002 survey, with comparison with earlier periods. It provides information on staffing levels in each council separately by grade of staff and service area.
