Proposed transport improvements for Glasgow
30/06/2003
Integrated transport and better public information are key to encouraging more people to use public transport, Transport Minister Nicol Stephen said today.
The Minister met with the new chairman of Strathclyde Passenger Transport Authority, Councillor Alastair Watson, in Glasgow today during a visit to see planned work on the Glasgow Subway and better ticketing information at Buchanan Bus Station.
Mr Stephen said:
"I am pleased to be able to visit Glasgow today and see first hand some of the planned public transport improvements. SPT has a central role in transport delivery for the West of Scotland and invaluable expertise which will be key to the future delivery of transport in Scotland.
"Improving access to public transport is one of my top priorities and this can only be done by transport bodies, local authorities and operators working together to benefit the travelling public. Building a consensus on how we deliver better transport can only be done by working together and I look forward to hearing people's views first hand."
The Minister travelled with Councillor Watson to experience first hand the quality of public transport in Glasgow. He visited Partick Subway station to hear about planned improvements to the interchange and also visited Buchanan Bus Station to learn about travel information designed for the visually impaired.
The Minister met with Councillor Alastair Watson, of Glasgow City Council in his new role as chairman of Strathclyde Passenger Transport Authority.
Last month SPT invited companies to tender for the £8.5 million Partick Interchange project which will see the existing building demolished and replaced with a new purpose built interchange which will provide better access to bus, rail and underground services. The Scottish Executive awarded the project £3.5 million from the Public Transport Fund in 1999.
