Minister recognises exam staff

16/06/2003

The efforts of Scotland's thousands of exam setters, markers and invigilators were today recognised by Education Minister Peter Peacock.

On his first visit to the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) offices since his appointment last month, Mr Peacock met some of the 20,000 part-time appointees who take on these crucial roles in the exam system each year.

Mr Peacock said:

"For exam candidates, it's easy to think that the hard work stops when the exams are over. But behind the scenes the hard work is only just beginning.

"Here at the Dalkeith nerve centre today I have seen for myself the scale of the challenge involved. The staff are processing a staggering three million exam papers, each one of which has to be marked and checked before final details are collated and certificates issued.

"I would like to thank the army of appointees and SQA staff for their dedication and hard work. Too often their efforts go unnoticed but they play a vital role in the exam process - from start to finish - and we could not do it without them."
