More cash for volunteers

Volunteers at nearly 240 organisations across Scotland are set to benefit from £112,000 of government funding.
To mark the end of Volunteers Week, Communities Deputy Minister, Mary Mulligan, announced the projects which will benefit from the Executive's 'Valuing Volunteers' scheme.
Ms Mulligan said:
"I am delighted to announce the allocation of this money today. Many people across Scotland contribute their time and talent to the voluntary sector. In doing so, they put a great deal back into their local communities.
"It is important that we recognise and reward the contribution volunteers make to our communities. The money announced today is one way of thanking them for their commitment and of encouraging more people to take up volunteering."
The 'Valuing Volunteers' scheme was launched by the Executive in March 2002 to recruit, recognise and reward people who contribute to their local communities through volunteering. Through the scheme, organisations can benefit from small grants of up to £500.
Around 240 organisations will receive funding this year for an extensive range of projects. These include Burnbank Health & Leisure Club, which has been awarded 500 pounds to train volunteers in accredited basic football coaching skills and the Friends of Willow Animal Sanctuary, which will receive 500 pounds to involve volunteers with mental health problems in creating a wildlife area.
'Valuing Volunteers' is administered for the Executive by the Unemployed Voluntary Action Fund (UVAF). In March 2002, the then Minister for Social Justice Iain Gray announced the continuation of a small grants scheme that had been run in 2001 to mark the International Year of Volunteers (IYV). The scheme was renamed 'Valuing Volunteers' and has been made available from the Scottish Executive Voluntary Issues Unit programme budget.
750,000 pounds has been earmarked for the scheme over a three year period. The amount announced today represents the first round of grants in 2003-2004. A further round of grants will be paid out in December to coincide with International Volunteers Day.
