LiveWIRE Awards 2003

30/05/2003

Scotland Young Entrepreneur of the Year and runner-up were presented with prizes at the Shell LiveWIRE Awards 2003 dinner at Stirling Castle last night.

Enterprise Minister Jim Wallace said:

"The calibre of tonight's winner and finalists demonstrates Scotland's entrepreneurial spirit is definitely alive and well. I am delighted to have the opportunity to personally congratulate some of our young entrepreneurs, who are energetically contributing to Scotland's future prosperity.

"Supporting and encouraging enterprise is one of the Executive's top priorities and I intend to foster this entrepreneurial spirit through our Smart Successful Scotland strategy and projects such as Determined to Succeed, which will encourage our school children to become the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.

"Under the Coalitions' new Partnership Agreement we will continue to create the conditions for growth and improve the quality of business support.

"To achieve our vision of a prosperous Scotland with a 'can do, will do' attitude the Executive will continue to encourage and support young people to help them meet their business and educational aspirations."

The Shell LiveWIRE Scotland Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, in its 21 st anniversary year, celebrates the achievements of newly established owner-managers between the ages of 16 and 30 in their first year of trading. The Scotland Young Entrepreneur of the Year goes forward to the UK final.

The Executive recently committed £40 million over three years to deliver Determined to Succeed as part of the Executive's Enterprise in Education strategy.

Determined to Succeed identifies a range of best practice measures in order to instil the necessary culture of enterprise in our young people and effectively support the transition from education to the workplace. It will involve further partnership between businesses and schools at a local and national level to deliver enterprising and entrepreneurial experiences for students beginning in the 2003-04 school session.
