20/05/2003

Jack McConnell MSP today took the oath of allegiance at the Court of Session in Edinburgh to be appointed First Minister and Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland for the next four years.

Mr McConnell, MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw, was nominated as FM by the Scottish Parliament last week and had the Royal Warrant presented to him during an audience with the Queen at Windsor Castle yesterday.

Mr McConnell, FM since November 2001 during the last Parliamentary term, was nominated to resume the post following coalition talks between Labour and Liberal Democrat MSPs returned at the May 1 election.
