Funding for Falkirk Community Stadium
25/03/2003
Proposals for community facilities in Falkirk have been given a £2 million boost, it was announced today.
Additional capital consent has been awarded to Falkirk Council to allow it to develop community facilities, including leisure and fitness amenities, at the site of the proposed new community football stadium at Westfield.
Minister for Finance and Public Services Andy Kerr said:
"This is excellent news for Falkirk. Extra Executive funding of £2 million will allow plans for new community facilities at the site of the proposed football stadium to proceed.
"I know that Falkirk FC and the council have been working closely on proposals for the community stadium project and I am pleased that the Executive is able to help the Council ensure that local people can benefit directly from the development
"These facilities will be available for use by the whole community, including a health club and five-a-side pitches. This reflects our commitment to build a healthier Scotland."
Falkirk Council and Falkirk F.C. have established a Joint Venture Company to develop a new community football stadium at Westfield in Falkirk. The additional capital consent has been provided to enable the Council to include community facilities for local people as part of the stadium project.
At present, Scottish Ministers issue consent for local authority capital investment. The additional consent will enable Falkirk Council to borrow funds to invest in the facilities. This is on top of the Council's general capital allocation. Support for the Council's borrowing costs are provided by the Executive as part of its revenue grant settlement.
