Reappointment to Highlands airports
21/03/2003
Stuart Edmond has been reappointed as a non-executive member of the board of Highlands & Islands Airports Ltd (HIAL) for a second term.
Stuart Edmond is a former Assistant Secretary of the Highlands & Islands Development Board and former Director of the Executive office of Highlands & Islands Enterprise (HIE) where he had major responsibilities for the staffing and organisational structure of HIE and its associated local enterprise companies.
Mr Edmond has served as a non-executive member since April 1, 2000. The post is part-time and will run from April 1, 2003 to March 31, 2006.
Transport Minister Iain Gray said:
"I am pleased to announce that Stuart Edmond has accepted my invitation to serve a second term on the Board of Highlands & Islands Airports Ltd.
"I very much appreciate the wisdom of corporate governance and deep knowledge of the Highlands & Islands area that he has brought to HIAL and I am grateful to him for his commitment.
"The last few years have seen record investment by the Executive in HIAL. The opening of new terminals at Stornoway and Kirkwall are among the most visible of the many developments which HIAL has made.
"This level of provision allows HIAL to operate ten airports in the Highlands and Islands, and keep airport charges at a level that will encourage the development of air services. Additional provision in future years will allow the development of Inverness Airport and other factors which will sustain the population and economy in the area.
"The Board has a crucial role in taking these exciting developments forward and I am confident that we have the right mix of skills and expertise to do so successfully."
This Ministerial Public Appointment was made in accordance with the Code of Practice issued by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments. The post is part time (two days a month) and has an annual salary of £6,297.
HIAL is wholly owned by the Scottish Ministers. The Company operates ten airports at Barra, Benbecula, Stornoway, Campbeltown, Islay Tiree, Inverness, Wick, Kirkwall and Sumburgh and facilitates access to, from and around the area for a range of people in pursuit of business, health, welfare, leisure and social objectives.
All of HIAL's airports are considered vital to the social and economic welfare of the areas they serve, are loss making and are supported by subsidies from the Executive.
