Launch of new guide for the over 50s

14/03/2003

A Scottish version of a practical guide for the over 50s was launched today.

The Scottish version of 'Are You Over 50?' has been produced by the UK Government Department for Work and Pensions in conjunction with the Scottish Executive. It is a practical guide to advice, support and services across Government on a number of issues such as work, money, healthy living, learning and training.

Speaking at the West of Scotland Seniors Forum, Deputy Minister for Health and Community Care Frank McAveety said:

"I welcome this new guide, which provides a range of advice and information for Scots over 50. The Scottish Executive is committed to improving information for older people. It produces a twice yearly newsletter 'Agenda' and has established an Older People's website and has worked with the UK Government on the Scottish version of the Pensioners' Guide.

"The new guide supplements that range of information and will be a valuable
reference for anyone over 50 who wants to know more about the help and
advice available through government and voluntary organisations. I am pleased that it has advice to improve health and fitness as part of our work to promote healthy ageing, and that it provides contact details for members of the public requesting more information.

"There are a number of Executive health improvement initiatives already in place, such as the Healthy Living advice line and website. Launched earlier this year, this service is equipped to provide members of the public with advice on how to eat healthily and how to improve their diet.
"Information on learning as an adult is also provided in the guide - it's never too late to learn something new, either for pleasure or to improve your job prospects. Learning as an adult is very different from the learning you may remember from school. You now have plenty of choice about what you learn, the speed you learn at, the way you learn and when you learn. The guide contains useful advice and who to contact for more information and there is also advice if you are over 50 and looking for work, or you want to change your career.

"I am delighted that the Executive is working closely with the UK Government on getting information for older people out into the public domain."

The Pensioners' Guide - Scotland gives more detailed information about extra money in retirement. It also gives information about leisure opportunities, housing and home improvements, transport, legal services and dealing with crime.
