10/03/2003

The Executive announced today that the value of sea fish landings by Scottish-based vessels fell by 4 per cent to £328 million last year with an average price increase of about 5 per cent.

By weight, landings were down by 9 per cent to 446,000 tonnes.

Scottish-based vessels landed 65 per cent by weight, and 60 per cent by value, of all landings by UK vessels last year.

The live weight of sea fish landed into Scotland rose by 8 per cent to 378 thousand tonnes last year worth a total of £315 million, a rise of 4 per cent.

Landings of demersal species into Scotland rose by 7 per cent in total and value fell by 2%, landings of pelagic species rose by 13 per cent and value rose by 50 per cent to £54 million.

A small decline in shellfish landings was offset by a rise in average shellfish prices, with value remaining at £92 million.

At the end of 2002, there were 842 active Scottish-based over-10 metre vessels - almost half of the over-10 metre UK fishing fleet.

The figures are a National Statistics publication. It has been produced to high professional standards set out in the National Statistics Code of Practice and Release Practice Protocol. < http://www.statistics.gov.uk/about_ns/cop/default.asp> These statistics undergo regular quality assurance reviews to ensure that they meet customer needs. They are produced free from any political interference.

The statistics are produced mainly from SEERAD's database which holds details of sea fish landings into Scotland, and landings by Scottish based vessels abroad. Scottish based vessels are those which are administered (i.e. licensed) at Scottish ports.

Skippers and fishsellers are required by EU and domestic legislation to provide information on fishing operations.
