Cash awards for Scotland's creatives
05/03/2003
Ten cash awards from the National Lottery are an investment in Scotland's foremost creative talent, the Creative Scotland Awards ceremony was told tonight.
Deputy Culture Minister Elaine Murray said the awards represented a critical accolade, allowing artistic visions to be realised and helping to create major new works.
At the Hub in Edinburgh each artist received £30,000 to develop their planned projects into completed works, which include civic art, a garden, music and light.
Dr Murray said:
"The arts bring many benefits to individuals, communities and society in general. Art can change our lives, changing the way we see the world and the way we see ourselves, and in Scotland we are fortunate to have such inspired sources of artistic vision.
"The works benefiting from these awards will be on show to the public, giving everyone the opportunity to see and enjoy works of excellence from some of our finest artists."
The Creative Scotland awards were first established in 1999 to provide artists with a proven track record an opportunity to develop and explore new ideas, which must be shown to the public on completion.
The artists who each receive £30,000 are:
Jim Buckley, visual artist/sculptor
Malcolm Fraser, architect
Ian Hamilton Finlay, visual artist
Brian Kellock, jazz pianist
Frank Kuppner, writer
Nicola McCartney, writer
Bernard MacLaverty, writer
Gordon MacPherson, composer
Mark O'Keeffe, musician
