Foot and Mouth all clear
04/03/2003
Precautionary movement restrictions served on a slaughterhouse in Broxburn, West Lothian, and a farm in Fife, following a report of lesions on the mouth and feet of a number of pigs, have been lifted.
The precautions were placed after the lesions were spotted on a delivery of pigs. The lesions, often characteristic of foot and mouth disease, were reported by the vet at the slaughterhouse to the animal health office in Galashiels at 9.25am today.
A veterinary team was despatched to the slaughterhouse from Galashiels and a team from the Perth Office was sent to the farm in Fife from where the pigs had come. Tight biosecurity measures were imposed at both venues while clinical tests were carried out.
Following the testing at the slaughterhouse the animals were established as disease free and the restrictions were lifted shortly before 3pm.
The clinical testing at the farm was concluded later in the afternoon and the farm given the all-clear.
