Minister gives consent to Borders transfer

26/02/2003

Minister for Social Justice, Margaret Curran today gave consent to Scottish Borders Council to transfer its housing stock (6728 houses) to the Scottish Borders Housing Association.

Ms Curran said:

"I am delighted that Scottish Borders will be the first council in Scotland to transfer its houses to a not for profit housing association and I would particularly like to acknowledge the unwavering drive, enthusiasm and dedication tenants have displayed throughout the transfer process.

"Tenants in the Borders voted overwhelmingly for community ownership and my consent marks the beginning of an era that will bring warm, dry, modern homes to the Scottish Borders and give tenants a much greater say over the management and development of their houses and communities.

"The Executive is committed to building safe, strong, sustainable communities and to promoting stock transfer as the key to unlock the significant new investment that will be required to meet the new Scottish Standard for Social Housing which I announced last year. I very much look forward to joining tenants, the council and the housing association next Monday to mark and celebrate transfer day".
