Scots line up for French campaign

21/02/2003

A major drive to attract more French visitors to Scotland was launched today in central Paris.

It is one of a series of events to promote Scotland in France during the Six Nations rugby weekend.

On Saturday, the Pipes and Drums of the Auld Alliance Parade and a 'Scottish village' at Montmartre will give Parisians a flavour of Scotland.

Speaking at a media breakfast to launch VisitScotland's spring campaign, Tourism Minister Mike Watson said:

"We want to develop an internationally competitive tourism industry which brings maximum benefit to the Scottish economy. This means investing in making Scotland a 'must visit' destination.

"A strong and innovative marketing campaign which builds on Scotland's strengths is an essential part of our approach.

"France is already one of our most important tourism markets, but there is real potential for growth. Historical alliances have created close cultural links between our two nations and there is considerable interest in Scotland.

"Scotland is close to France and is getting closer thanks to improving transport links - direct air access from Paris and through the new Superfast ferry service to Rosyth.

"We have an enormous amount to offer French visitors, whether they are interested in touring the country or in short city breaks. This weekend Scotland is coming to Paris. In the future, I hope more and more of our French hosts will give us the opportunity to return their hospitality."

Later today Mr watson will discuss the French tourism market with VisitScotland and the head of the British Tourist Authority in France, and speak at a Devolution Seminar at the British Council.

VisitScotland's Spring Campaign in France includes: advertising in national and regional press, direct mail information packs for key contacts, an internet campaign, and VisitScotland representation at a range of exhibitions. For further information, contact Rachel Hoyland on 07741 051653.
