Launch of recycling scheme in Edinburgh

14/02/2003

A new kerbside recycling scheme was launched in Edinburgh today, expecting to recycle upwards of 8,000 tonnes of paper each year in the capital.

Edinburgh City Council's 'The Recycling Round' will cover 120,000 households in Edinburgh, and follows a successful kerbside paper collection trial funded by the Executive's Strategic Waste Fund.

Deputy Environment Minister Allan Wilson said:

"The Scottish Executive is committed to improving quality of life. Our commitment is highlighted by the award we recently made of almost £110 million to local councils to improving recycling and waste management across Scotland.

"We will shortly be announcing details of Scotland's first National Waste Plan. The Edinburgh scheme will help meet targets that the Executive has already set for waste minimisation, recycling, composting and the reduction in waste going to landfill.

"I hope more councils will follow Edinburgh's innovative lead, contributing to the Executive's target of recycling and composting 25% of municipal waste by 2006."

The Scottish Executive will launch its National Waste Plan on 24 February.

Charity will benefit from the 'Recycling Round' as £1 per tonne will be donated to the Save the Children.
