Planning and open space
29/01/2003
The Executive today published Planning Advice Note 65: Planning and Open Space which highlights good practice and outlines ways in which planning authorities can carry out an analysis of open space within their area.
It offers examples of good practice and provides local authorities and others with advice on carrying out such analysis. It also advises on the provision and maintenance of quality spaces and the preparation of open space strategies.
Speaking in advance of an address to leading Scottish public and private sector practitioners in planning and property, Minister for Social Justice Margaret Curran said:
"Open spaces are important to our quality of life. I recognise that Scotland's planning system has a central role to play in protecting open space that is valuable and valued. It can also help to improve the quality and accessibility of our spaces.
"Through the publication of this Advice Note the Executive is looking to promote effective links between open space planning, design and management, and the involvement of local communities, to ensure that current and future open space needs can be met."
The conference on planning agreements (jointly organised by the Executive, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Scotland, the Royal Town Planning Institute Scotland, and Homes for Scotland, is taking place at the Dalmahoy Hotel today and tomorrow.
PAN 65 follows on from research, Rethinking Open Space, published by the Scottish Executive in 2001.
