Scottish annual business statistics 2000
28/01/2003
Statistics for 2000 from the Scottish Production Database, the Scottish Construction Database, and the Scottish Services Database have been published today.
These figures show the following.
- In 2000, turnover in production, construction and services (less finance and public sector) in Scotland amounted to £145bn. Of this, 50% related to services, 28% to manufacturing, 14% to mining, quarrying and utilities, and 8% to construction.
- Gross Value Added per head (a measure of productivity) in the manufacturing sector is almost twice the level of the service sector (less finance and public sector).
- Glasgow City has the greatest local authority area share of services activity (less finance and public sector), defined in terms of employment or gross valued added, followed by Edinburgh City and Aberdeen City.
- Glasgow City also has the greatest share of manufacturing activity, followed by Fife and South Lanarkshire.
The Scottish Production Database (SPD), Scottish Construction Database (SCD) and Scottish Services Database (SSD) are annual databases compiled by the Analytical Services Division of the Scottish Executive Enterprise and Lifelong Learning Department. They are derived from data collected by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) via the Annual Business Inquiry (ABI). They contain data on many financial variables (such as total turnover, total purchases, gross value added and net capital expenditure), as well as some data on employment, and geographical and industry classification details.
The SSD covers the service sector excluding the financial sector and some of the public sector.
The latest available data from the SPD/SCD/SSD relate to 2000. There is an inevitable time lag before the data become available to allow for survey work, compilation of the database and checking of the results. Data for 1999 were published in January 2002. Since then there have been some some methodological changes in how the data are derived. In addition, some revisions to the base data have been received from ONS. Work is ongoing to assess the effect of these developments, and revised data for 1999 will be published in due course if necessary.
In November 2002 Regional Accounts figures were issued by ONS, which were subsequently found to contain errors and withdrawn. Regional Accounts make significant use of ONS's ABI data. Although the ABI data is also the main source of the SPD/SCD/SSD, the errors identified do not apply to these databases.
