Edinburgh Festival Youth Fund
21/01/2003
An Edinburgh Festival Youth Development Fund was launched today by the council.
At the ceremony, Deputy Culture Minister Elaine Murray said engaging the creative imagination of young people and widening their opportunities in the arts is vitally important to the future vibrancy of cultural life in Scotland.
Dr Murray said:
"Festivals are vitally important to the cultural and economic life of Edinburgh and Scotland, and the image of a vibrant and cultured Scotland abroad encourages tourists to visit.
"This programme increases the focus given to young people's involvement in the cultural life of Edinburgh.
"By stimulating and enriching young peoples' creativity and lifelong engagement with the arts, we will ensure the continued success of Edinburgh's festivals and more widely improve in the quality of life in our communities".
The Edinburgh Festival Youth Development Fund will allocate £300,000 to be shared variously by 10 festivals. For more information contact Ailley White, Edinburgh City Council on 0131 529 4427.
Funding has been made available to the city by the Executive's Quality of Life funding for all local authorities - £95 million for 2002-03, of which Edinburgh's allocation is £7.5 million.
The Executive's Quality of Life funding allocates £180 million to local authorites over three years 2003-04 to 2005-06.
Funds are designed to help local leaders to lead and deliver real improvement in the quality of life in our communities.
