Cereal production estimate
16/01/2003
The final estimate of 2002 total Scottish cereal production - 2,540,349 tonnes - was published today.
This matches the provisional October estimate. This represents a 4.37 per cent decline on production in 2001. Total combinable crop production is estimated at 2,651,000 tonnes, which is 4.39 per cent down on 2001. The details for each crop are:
* The wheat area increased by 22 per cent with average yield falling by 2 per cent. Production of wheat rose by 20 per cent to 739,000 tonnes.
* The area of winter barley grown rose by 11 per cent and yield increased by 7 per cent, resulting in a 19 per cent increase in production. In contrast spring barley, the most widely-grown crop, saw decreases in both area grown (six per cent) and yield (13 per cent). This resulted in a decrease in spring barley production of 19 per cent, to 1,280,000 tonnes. The net effects of these changes are that total barley production decreased by 12 per cent to 1,690,000 tonnes.
* Winter oats production rose by 10 per cent, reflecting the net effect of a 32 per cent increase in area grown and a 17 per cent reduction in yield. The area of spring oats grown decreased by four per cent and yield decreased by 10 per cent. Overall oats production declined to 105,000 tonnes as the overall three per cent increase in area grown was more than offset by an 11 per cent decrease in yield.
* Total production of oilseed rape declined by 2 per cent to 104,000 tonnes, reflecting an 11 per cent decrease in area grown and an increase in yield of 11 per cent. Within the total, production of spring oilseed rape decreased by 45 per cent while production of winter oilseed rape increased by five per cent.
* The area of linseed grown fell by 43 per cent. Despite a 34 per cent increase in yield, production fell by 23 per cent, to 1,800 tonnes.
* Protein peas production decreased by 39 per cent to 4,600 tonnes reflecting decreased area grown (24 per cent) and yield (20 per cent).
Crop area is taken from the June 2002 Agricultural Census. Yield and production estimates are obtained from a random sample survey of farms growing cereals, oilseed crops and peas.
These figures update the forecasts released in the Scottish Executive News Release SEEN182/2002. No further revised estimates will be published.
