First ever open day at Bute House

06/12/2002

First Minister Jack McConnell will tomorrow (Dec 7) welcome visitors to the first ever open day at Bute House, his official residence in Edinburgh.

Over 100 people will tour the house throughout the day and Mr McConnell will greet the first visitors.

Mr McConnell said:

"Bute House is a magnificent building and a particularly fine example of Georgian architecture. Great attention has been paid to period details and stepping through the doors at Bute House gives visitors a glimpse of life in days gone by.

"Students from various Scottish schools and colleges have already experienced the atmosphere at Bute House when they provide catering and music for dinner parties.

"However, I know that many more people would love to see behind Bute House's imposing façade and that is why we have worked with the National Trust for Scotland to organise today's inaugural open day. Obviously there are security issues to be considered, but I hope similar open days can be organised in future."

Bute House is owned by the National Trust for Scotland (NTS). The open day has been organised in conjunction with the NTS and tickets for the event were restricted to NTS members.
