£7.1m for West of Scotland transport

02/12/2002

An additional £7.1 million for Strathclyde Passenger Transport Authority was announced today, as part of a new partnership approach to delivering better transport services in the West of Scotland.

SPT propose to spend the money on new dial-a-bus services, important maintenance on the subway and to improve information about bus services.

Making the announcement, Deputy Minister for Enterprise, Transport and Lifelong Learning Lewis Macdonald said:

"The transport budget we announced in September is bringing massive new resources which will deliver much better services for many people.

"Getting the money into projects on the ground will require experience and expertise and in the west SPT is well-equipped to deliver. We have been talking to SPT over the last couple of months about what they need to do to gear up to the new challenges.

"I am pleased today to say that we have offered SPT funding for a variety of preparatory work which - if it is accepted - will bring benefits early in the new year. This is a good deal for the west of Scotland and I look forward to a partnership approach which will deliver better services."

The funding is expected to be agreed at the meeting of SPTA on Friday 6 December.
