Minister acknowledges exam outcome
27/11/2002
The publication of figures on individual schools performance in this year's National Qualifications exams was welcomed today by Education Minister Cathy Jamieson.
However the Minister stressed that exam performance was only one - albeit important - indicator of a school's performance.
Examination Results in Scottish Schools 2000-2002 reports on cumulative attainment in SQA examinations by the end of each stage. Information is provided on a school by school basis and also at Education Authority and National Levels.
Ms Jamieson said:
"Examination results are clearly important to individual pupils and their schools - they provide the main currency for young people as they make their way through life.
"The information published today therefore is a key support to education authorities and schools in planning future progress within our National Priorities Improvement Framework.
"However this publication does not represent the sole indicator of a school's performance and achievements. Effective education meets social and cultural as well as academic needs. Performance needs to be measured against all five of our National Priorities in Education not just in relation to exam results.
"We are working with education authorities and schools to ensure our education service gives students every chance to succeed in life as well as in learning - raising overall standards while closing the gap between those who succeed and those who fall behind."
Figures for 2002 are pre-appeals. Around March there will be a detailed analysis of the post-appeals examination results.
National Priorities are part of the improvement framework set out under the Standards in Scotland's Schools etc Act 2000. The present National Priorities are defined under the headings:
- Achievement and Attainment
- Framework for Learning
- Inclusion and Equality
- Values and Citizenship
- Learning for Life
