Community waste recycling initiatives
18/11/2002
More than £10 million in initiatives to help make Scotland's communities cleaner, greener and safer was today welcomed by Minister for Environment and Rural Development Ross Finnie.
Mr Finnie said:
"The throwaway society is not sustainable and finding greener ways to dispose of waste can only be achieved by us all working together.
"Community involvement is a key factor in delivering our National Waste Strategy and local area waste strategies.
"Money alone cannot deal with waste and recycling. Part of turning around Scotland's poor record on waste recycling is about changing attitudes.
"The Executive's ambitious drive to recycle 25 per cent of all municipal waste by 2006 can only be achieved through campaigns to change perceptions and mechanisms like the National Waste Strategy.
"That strategy is designed to improve communities' environments and aims to help all of us use resources more efficiently, recycling a greater proportion of our waste."
The New Opportunities Fund announced the partners who will assess applications to the Fund's Transforming Waste and Transforming Your Space programmes.
Forward Scotland, the Recycling Advisory Group Scotland, SEPA and Keep Scotland Beautiful will deliver the £5.25 million programme on community recycling initiatives, while Forward Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage will handle a similar sum to help communities make their local environments healthier, cleaner, greener, welcoming and accessible.
