Crackdown on hoax 999 calls

14/11/2002

Hoax fire calls will be treated seriously and with priority by the prosecution service in Scotland.

Lord Advocate Colin Boyd QC, in a speech opening the crime debate at the Scottish Parliament today, said:

"I want to take this opportunity to condemn the making of hoax fire calls and to make it clear such cases will be treated seriously and with priority.

"I will be issuing instructions to the police today regarding reports to the Procurator Fiscal in order to emphasise how seriously we take these cases."

There has been a reported rise in the number of hoax fire calls since the national Fire Service strike began earlier this week.
