Glen Urquhart Community High School
11/11/2002
The £6 million Glen Urquhart Community High School in Drumnadrochit was opened today.
First Minister Jack McConnell performed the ceremony and met another First Minister - Judi Crichton of the school's pupil executive - and her deputy Steven Chung.
Mr McConnell said:
"In the 21 st century, it is wrong that some of our youngsters are still being taught in sub-standard or miserable classrooms. All pupils deserve to be taught in the type of modern environment that helps our teachers to teach and our pupils to learn.
"That is exactly what the pupils at Glen Urquhart have now. And for the first time in the school's history, they also have excellent PE facilities including an impressive games hall, outdoor pitches and a gym.
"The community will also reap the benefits of these marvellous facilities - and that is particularly fitting here as I know that local people fought hard to press the case for a new school in Drumnadrochit.
"Throughout Scotland, we are making a difference as more and more new or refurbished schools are completed, removing barriers to learning for pupils and helping to bring communities closer together."
Glen Urquhart High School was part of Highland Council's four school Public Private Partnership (PPP) - the other schools were Ardnamurchan High School, Spean Bridge Primary and Strathdearn Primary. All four opened at the start of the current school year.
The school, which currently has a role of 193, includes a childcare centre, joint community/school library with internet access, a games hall, fitness suite, all-weather and grass pitches, and a 200-seat theatre.
