Appointment to Scottish Social Services Council

The appointment of Ms Judith Midgely to the Board of the Scottish Social Services Council was announced today by Scottish Ministers.

Ms Midgely will become the newest member of the Scottish Social Services Council. She is a lawyer by training and is currently active in the voluntary sector working in support of people with learning disabilities. She is the Depute Co-ordinator at Fair Deal for 1 in 100.

Her appointment is for three years commencing on 1 November 2002. Remuneration for Board Members is £7,000 per annum. She has not undertaken any political activity in the last 5 years and holds no other Ministerial appointments.

The Council, based in Dundee, became operational on 1 October 2001. It is responsible for improving the quality of social services and protecting the public by strengthening and supporting the professionalism of the workforce and raising standards of practice. The Council will regulate the social work and social care workforce which covers more than 100,000 people.

This ministerial appointment was made in accordance with guidance issued by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments. A statement of validation from the Independent Assessor appointed by OCPA has been obtained. This confirms full compliance with the OCPA Code of Practice at each stage of the appointments process.

The post of Commissioner for Public Appointments was established in November 1995 on the recommendation of the Committee on Standards in Public Life, then popularly known as the Nolan Committee. The Commissioners role is to regulate, monitor and report on ministerial appointments health bodies, as well as non-departmental public bodies, public corporations, nationalised industries and the appointments of Utility Regulators.
