Funding to support local sustainability policies
29/10/2002
New funding from the Executive will benefit local authorities in promoting sustainable development across Scotland, it was announced today.
A Support Officer post to assist the Scottish Sustainable Network will be funded by the Executive at a cost of £50,000. The post will help develop schemes in areas including waste minimisation and recycling, and is being funded through the Scottish share of the Aggregates Levy.
Making the announcement, Environment Minister Ross Finnie said:
"Action at a local level is essential to deliver effective sustainable development policies. Local authorities currently do a great deal of work in implementing policies which take account of sustainable development, and this funding will help them do even more.
"This post will provide a common resource so that the Network can do its job effectively. Its creation will strengthen linkages at a local level, promote good practices in sustainable development in Scotland, and help raise awareness. It will also improve co-operation amongst local authorities, and between them and other bodies."
Alan Speedie, Secretary of the Sustainable Scotland Network, said:
"We are delighted that the Executive has made this contribution. This will be a major boost to promoting Sustainable Development in Scotland."
The Sustainable Scotland Network's (SSN) Annual Conference is being held in Stirling on 24-25 October.
The Conference is being held in the Stirling Tolbooth: (01786) 274141.
The SSN comprises members from all Scottish local authorities, responsible for promoting sustainable development programmes in their areas - previously under the name Local Agenda 21. It works closely with the Scottish Executive.
SSN can be contacted at (01786) 443335.
This is a further project funded from the Aggregates Levy. The Community Environmental Renewal Grants scheme and Marine Environment projects were announced on 16 and 17 October respectively.
Funding for the post is being provided initially over the next 2 years. It will allow for salary, National Insurance and pensions provision, training, travel, and expenses.
