21/10/2002
A new CCTV Customer Services Centre was officially opened at Paisley's Gilmour Street Station today.
The facilities are designed to increase personal security and provide interactive information and assistance for passengers.
The Centre will serve 118 of Strathclyde Passenger Transport's stations, making it the largest monitoring centre in Scotland.
It will deal with any kind of passenger enquiry or appeal, offer timetable information, general assistance and also a direct link to British Transport Police Headquarters.
Transport Minister Iain Gray said:
"I believe that the CCTV technology available in this new Customer Services Centre demonstrates real progress in supplying up-to-date passenger information and improved security for the travelling public. Interactive CCTV technology and the network of communication it provides, will benefit passengers and our railway network.
"We are investing records amounts to build a sustainable, effective, reliable and integrated transport system to provide better choices for the travelling public. The improvements provided by this Customer Services Centre will encourage more people to travel by train, helping to reduce urban traffic congestion.
"Trains are a very safe means of transport however some fears persist that waiting at stations can be intimidating or even dangerous. There is convincing evidence that increasing personal security will make travelling by train even more attractive. The advanced technology offered by this Customer Services Centre will reassure rail passengers that travelling by train provides a safe and secure environment."
The new facility will serve two key functions:
- CCTV monitoring and quick response to reported concerns or incidents
- an interactive customer Help Point which will enable travellers to access assistance and information about specific services
