@Home in Airdrie centre

21/08/2002

A youth centre which provides young people in Airdrie with a range of services has been praised today by Minister for Education and Young People Cathy Jamieson.

The @Home Centre is a project which, as well as offering internet and study areas, provides information on a range of health issues affecting young people.

Speaking at the centre, Ms Jamieson said:

"All too often we hear about young people when things go wrong. But in my experience, the vast majority of them are responsible young people who simply want to be able to access services relevant to their lives.

"The @Home Centre provides a focal point for young people in Airdrie. It is somewhere safe they can come, whether to study, use the internet or simply to meet up with friends. And its link with Youth Health Lanarkshire means that young people can get hold of relevant, high quality information on health issues.

"The @Home Centre is an excellent example of what can be achieved when young people are asked what it is they want, and when people work together in partnership to provide it."

The @Home Project was established after a youth conference and a survey of more than 2,000 young people throughout Airdrie identified several ideas that they wanted to take forward. It was officially opened in April 2001.
