Clyde embraces rebuilding process

24/06/2002

A long term, co-operative approach to the regeneration of the Upper Clyde corridor can lead to an economic boom for the area, the Executive said today.

Enterprise Minister Iain Gray and Social Justice Minister Margaret Curran were speaking at a meeting to review the work that has been carried out by the River Clyde Working Group to date. The meeting also marked the publication of Clyde Rebuilt - an outline of the group's main findings.

Iain Gray said:

"I am delighted to have assumed responsibility for the River Clyde Working Group. Today's meeting has shown that there is a real will among all the public and private sector bodies involved to work in co-operation to realise the vision of a Clyde Rebuilt.

"The potential economic development opportunities in the Upper Clyde corridor are enormous, but they represent a long-term challenge. I am positive that it is only by working together to develop a shared strategic vision that we can realise the full economic and social development potential of the Upper Clyde.

" Clyde Rebuilt has shown that a great deal of preparatory work has been progressed to date and it is now up to the Group to move this work forward. I am confident that this can be achieved. I am confident that the long term regeneration of the Upper Clyde can be a reality."

Praising the work of the River Clyde Working Group, Margaret Curran commented:

"It is clear that the regeneration of the River Clyde will play a key role in the overall re-vitalisation not just of Glasgow, but of other areas along the Clyde. Our key role is to ensure that any developments that do go ahead recognise the interdependence between social and economic progress so that everyone has access to the benefits they bring.

"This work dovetails well with the recently approved Glasgow & Clyde Valley Structure Plan, which promotes a corridor of growth along the River Clyde."

Today's meeting follows on from the establishment last year of the River Clyde Working Group which took forward several key pieces of work which informed the report, Clyde ReBuilt, A National Development Opportunity.

The River Clyde Working Group is chaired by Scottish Enterprise and comprises officials of the relevant local authorities and local enterprise companies, the Glasgow & Clyde Valley Structure Plan Team and the Scottish Executive.

Initiatives already underway within the Working Group's geographic remit include the Clydebank Waterfront, Renfrew Harbour and Riverside, Glasgow Harbour, Tradeston and Pacific Quay. The Group sees its role as building on existing work and adding value through identifying synergies and looking at wider cross-cutting issues.

Following consensus as to the next steps, the River Clyde Working Group will proceed to:

  • continue to work together in a city-region framework
  • establish a visioning process
  • prepare a development framework
  • work up proposals for a delivery mechanism to implement these proposals
